Dr. Wendy Watson-Wright

Dr. Watson-Wright began her career in the Canadian federal public service as a research scientist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She later spent five years as Director of the DFO’s Biological Station in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. From 2001 to 2009, she was DFO’s Assistant Deputy Minister of Science, and from 2015 until joining the Ocean Frontier Institute, was the Regional Director General of DFO’s Gulf Region. From 2010 to 2015, Dr. Watson-Wright led the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) in Paris as its Executive Secretary and Assistant Director General. 

Dr. Watson-Wright has been on several boards and panels including Ocean Networks Canada, MEOPAR, the Council of Canadian Academies’ Expert Panel on Ocean Science and the Strategic Advisory Board for the European Union’s Joint Programming Initiative on Oceans (JPI Oceans). As well, she was an invited member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Wendy Schmidt Ocean Health X-Prize.

Among her many successes and attributes, she is a Killam scholar and holds a Ph.D. in Physiology from Dalhousie University.

The former Chair of the Department of Oceanography at Dalhousie University; Dr. Lewis, is an award-winning researcher whose honours include the Lindemann Award from the American Society for Limnology and Oceanography, a Special Outstanding Achievement Award from NASA, a Killam Prize from Dalhousie University, a Poste Rouge from the French Centre Nationale de Researche Scientifique and the Izaak Walton Killam Professorship at Dalhousie. He was also named Entrepreneur of the Year in the Technology category in Atlantic Canada (YEAR), and listed in the Top 50 CEO's in Atlantic Canada (YEAR). He holds adjunct appointments at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, the Ocean University of China, Shandong University and Xiamen University.  

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Lewis has served on numerous advisory councils and boards including the U.S. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Council of Canadian Academies, and the Small and Medium Enterprise Advisory Committee to the Canadian Minister of International Trade. 

He received a Bachelors and Masters in Science and Ecology at the University of Maryland, and a Ph.D. in Biology from Dalhousie University in 1984.   

Dr. Paul Snelgrove

Dr. Snelgrove is Director of the NSERC Canadian Healthy Oceans Network, a national research network in Canada and a Professor of Biological Oceanography in the Department of Ocean Sciences and Biology at Memorial University in Newfoundland. From 2003 to 2013, he held a Canada Research Chair in Boreal and Cold Ocean Systems, and in 2012 he held the Knapp Visiting Chair at the University of San Diego. As well, he was a NSERC Industrial Chair in Fisheries Conservation from 1996-2002. Dr. Snelgrove published the book “Discoveries of the Census of Marine Life: Making Ocean Life Count” with Cambridge University Press in 2010, and was awarded the Parsons Medal for Achievement in Interdisciplinary Ocean Sciences in Canada by DFO. In 2015, Memorial University awarded him the title; University Research Professor.

Among his many awards and achievements, Dr. Snelgrove sits on numerous advisory boards in Canada and internationally, and frequently sits on review panels and editorial boards.

Dr. Snelgrove received a BSc. Hons degree in Biology at Memorial in 1984, a Master's degree in Oceanography from McGill University in 1987 and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Biology Department at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1993. 

Dr. Dan Jackson

Dr. Jackson joins OFI after his previous role as Assistant Dean (Finance and Administration) in the Faculty of Science at Dalhousie University, where he also served as Operations Director for the Ocean Tracking Network and Associate Vice President Academic (Acting). After receiving his PhD in Marine Biology from Dalhousie in 1999 he began his career as a research scientist at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography.

A Chartered Professional Accountant, Ms. Rideout joined OFI after a nine-year career as a part of Memorial University’s Faculty of Science. An entrepreneur, she is the owner-operator of two Subway franchises in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

When she isn’t working, Julie can be found studying at Memorial University where she is currently completing her Bachelor of Education.
