About the Ocean Frontier Institute
The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI) was established in September 2015 as a global leader for innovative ocean research.

Our vision

To be a global leader in transnational interdisciplinary ocean research, producing demonstrable and enduring social, economic, and environmental benefits.

Strategic approach

Discover

Conduct research on our changing ocean and use the results to identify innovative solutions that advance the safe and sustainable development of the North Atlantic

  • Examine atmosphere-sea interactions and shifting ecosystems to understand root causes and implications for the environment and our economy
  • Identify effective approaches to resource development that are sustainable, globally competitive, societally acceptable, and resilient
  • Work with domestic and international governments and intergovernmental organizations to translate research results into public policy
  • Advocate opportunities to apply research results on a commercial scale

Collaborate

Engage stakeholders and rightsholders in ocean management solutions and build support for ocean research and its applications

  • Develop mutually-beneficial relationships with partners that drive advantages on a transnational scale
  • Ensure OFI’s research — and the recommendations contained within — reflect the input of Indigenous peoples and stakeholders (see OFI's Indigenous Engagement Guide for more information)

Lead

Advance ocean-related learning and teaching

  • Nurture top talent at OFI learning institutions
  • Build capacity by enabling researchers to efficiently and cost-effectively access in-water and analytical infrastructure
  • Invest in state-of-the-art laboratory space that advances science
  • Support the development and delivery of resources and programs to advance ocean literacy

Enable

Achieve OFI’s vision through operational excellence

  • Build effective organizational and governance structures
  • Systematically gather and share quantitative and qualitative research results, creating a catalyst for ocean management solutions
  • Leverage research results, illustrating how they benefit the economy and the environment
  • Advance equity, diversity, and inclusion through our programming
  • Develop a funding strategy for post 2024
